Double Vision

There are all kinds of reasons why you might want to watch TV over the Internet at work; maybe, like music, it makes you more proactive.

The trouble with watching videos is, unlike music, it’s hard to put in the background. A new free application called Double Vision is looking out for the workplace TV fanatics. It streams videos from such places as YouTube and Hulu transparently on your desktop (just look at the picture below to see what I’m talking about).

Gimp

For every pricey software/computer program out there, there is equally great free software that does the same thing. For a free Windows use Ubuntu; for a free version of Office use OpenOffice; and for PhotoShop, there is Gimp.

PhotoShop is great for the guy working in graphic design who actually needs 1,000 some odd templates/filters, but what about the rest of us? Gimp has you covered…download it and see for yourself.

Comparative shopping

I do my best to compative shop before making purchases; there are a number of sites out there that help you do this…from CNET to Google Shopping. My preference in the past has been PriceGrabber, which shows you how much several different online sites are selling a particular item for, and where you can get it the cheapest.

Recently, I found another site that promises to go one step further by showing you how much an item sold for in recent months (that way you can see if the price is falling, staying the same, or even goin up, which I imagine happens near the holidays). It’s called Mpire. I’m not a big fan of of how it helps you comparative shop, but I do like the graphs (who isn’t a sucker for graphs?)

Being Green and Saving Money In One Bottle.

If you are anything like me, I constantly have a bottled water or bottled anything with me. When looking for a way to put back some money, the big one was bottled water. Scott, being the librarian he is, researched for me the next best thing, and it was the Sigg.

The Sigg is one of my favorite inventions. Not only does it protect the environment, but it helps with saving on water. I love the design, and the inside is made of strong aluminum coating, so it is great for hot or ice cold drinks. Also, unlike regular bottles, the after taste of whatever you last had left inside doesn’t stick. I can stick it in the dishwasher, and no damage.

I was a little worried about the price, but according to it’s website, the aluminum doesn’t rust, or shatter or reshape from leaving water inside too long, dropping it, or extreme temperatures. I wanted to buy a cheaper one, but the idea of dropping it, and then taking a sip to have broken aluminum in my mouth made me think twice. I put it to the test, and yes, it does obtain it’s shape, and form. Plus, you can’t beat the awesome designs.

Printable Checklist

This entry comes from a tip from my beautiful wife (and sometimes “I Can’t Save” blogger), Diana. She frequently is looking for things to help her be more organized.

She recently found, and has been enjoying, a free website app that let’s you make a checklist of things you need to do (such as what you need to pick up from the grocery store, what homework to do in the current week, etc).

The Paper Architect

I am lousy at art; there’s a new book out that promises to help even the artistic impairred. It’s called The Paper Architect. It’s less than twenty bucks on Amazon, and includes 20 different templates to fill up your evenings. At less than a buck a project it’s a pretty cheap bargain.
